Baldwin County, Alabama

One truck. One man. All of Robertsdale.

Baldwin County builds fast and builds new, and new does not mean trouble free. A lot of the work here is slab, PEX and tankless, which fails differently than the old copper and cast iron across the bay.

Plumbing in Robertsdale

Every Robertsdale job is quoted and done by the same person, so nothing gets lost between what you were told and what gets done. The diagnosis comes first and it comes in words you can repeat to someone else. That is deliberate.

No service is limited by where you are. Robertsdale gets the whole list and a truck that carries the common parts. See the full service list, or send Paul a message.

You get told what the work takes before it starts. Running solo means there is no sales target pushing the bigger job. Sometimes the honest answer is a small repair, and you hear it.

Toward the coast Baldwin County sits on sand, and grinder pumps and lift stations are ordinary in a way they are not in most places. Pictures of the work are in the gallery.

What Baldwin County plumbing runs into

  • Crimped fittings and manifolds

Where PEX is the supply system, the failures cluster at fittings that were crimped poorly and at the manifold rather than along the runs. That is good news: it means the problem is usually findable at an access point instead of inside a wall.

  • Tankless needs service that nobody scheduled

A tankless unit in this water wants descaling on a schedule. Skipped long enough, the symptom is lukewarm water and short cycling that reads like a failing unit when it is actually just scale.

  • Pressure in newer subdivisions

Several of the newer developments run high municipal pressure, which quietly shortens the life of every valve, fill valve and appliance hose in the house. A gauge on a hose bib settles it, and a regulator fixes it permanently.

  • Why the one-truck thing matters here

There is no dispatcher deciding which technician you get and no commission structure deciding what gets recommended. The person who quotes the job is the person doing it, so there is nobody to hand a bad call to. That is the whole reason this shop stayed one truck.

  • Older houses behave differently

Much of the housing stock in this part of Alabama is old enough to have cast iron drains, galvanized supply, or a mix of three generations of repairs. Those systems do not fail the way a new build fails, and the repair that is right for one is wrong for the other. Experience with the local stock is most of the job.

How to tell what you’re dealing with

Knowing which of these sounds like your house makes the first call a lot shorter.

  • If it is everything on one side of the house

That points at a branch line rather than a fixture, and it usually means a partial blockage or a slope problem in the drain serving that branch.

  • If the lowest drain backs up first

Water finds the lowest opening. A tub or floor drain that fills when the washer runs is the main line talking, and clearing the sink upstairs does nothing for it.

  • If it only happens with hot water

That isolates it to the water heater or the hot side of the system, which is a much shorter list than the whole house and usually a much cheaper answer.

  • If it got worse slowly

Gradual loss of flow is scale, sediment or root intrusion closing a passage over time. Sudden loss is a break, a blockage that arrived all at once, or a valve that failed.

“Our hot water went out on a Friday afternoon & being pregnant I was desperate for a hot shower this weekend. Paul scheduled us with less than a 24 hour notice…”

Things worth doing yourself

None of this needs a plumber. It’s the short list that prevents the calls nobody wants to make.

  • Water heater Check the T and P valve and look at the base of the tank for rust or damp. Five minutes, twice a year.
  • Drains Hot water and a drain screen beat chemical cleaner. Caustic drain products damage older pipe and make a cable job messier later.
  • Hose bibs Disconnect hoses before the first hard freeze. A connected hose holds water in the bib and that is what splits it.
  • Toilets A drop of food coloring in the tank will tell you in ten minutes whether the flapper leaks.
  • Grinder pumps Test that the alarm actually sounds. An alarm nobody has checked is not an alarm.

Straight answers

Still not sure? Ask Paul directly.

Do you come out to Robertsdale?

When somebody in Robertsdale calls, the schedule is Paul’s own, so he can tell you honestly whether it is today or tomorrow morning rather than guessing on someone else’s behalf.

Who shows up at the door?

Paul Evans. The same person who answers the phone, every time.

Are you licensed to work here?

Licensed Master Plumber MP4379, bonded and insured, working all of Baldwin County.

What areas do you cover?

Mobile, Baldwin and Washington County, out of Wilmer, roughly a fifty mile radius.

Will you try to sell me a replacement?

No. There is no commission structure here and no quota, so if a repair will hold, that is what you get told.

Do you work on older homes?

Yes. A lot of the housing stock here is older, and cast iron, galvanized and polybutylene all behave differently. That is diagnosis work, which is the part that matters.

Let’s talk solutions.

Tell Paul what it’s doing. He’ll tell you what it needs and when he can be there.
