Washington County, Alabama

Honest plumbing work in Leroy.

Much of Washington County runs on wells, pumps and pressure tanks as much as on pipe. Iron and sediment are ordinary, and filtration is not a luxury item here.

Plumbing in Leroy

When somebody in Leroy calls, the schedule is Paul’s own, so he can tell you honestly whether it is today or tomorrow morning rather than guessing on someone else’s behalf. You get the cause, the fix and the honest version of how urgent it is.

Everything on the service list is available in Leroy, and the truck carries what most of it takes to finish the same visit. See the full service list, or send Paul a message.

You get told what the work takes before it starts. No incentive here pays more for a replacement than a repair, which removes the reason most people distrust a plumbing quote.

Washington County is rural and spread out, and a lot of it is on well water and septic rather than municipal service. That changes what a plumbing call looks like before anybody opens a wall. Pictures of the work are in the gallery.

What Washington County plumbing runs into

  • Long runs, rural lots

Houses sit further apart and service runs are longer, which means a leak underground can run a long time before anything shows at the surface or on a bill. Shut the house down and watch the meter or the pump cycle; a pump that kicks on with nothing running is telling you something.

  • When the pump is the problem

On a well system a pressure complaint is as likely to be the tank, the switch or the pump as anything in the house plumbing. Checking the tank’s air charge before touching a fixture saves chasing the wrong thing.

  • Septic changes what can go down

On septic, a garbage disposal and heavy chemical cleaner are both harder on the system than most people realize. What goes down the drain matters more here than it does on a municipal line.

  • Why the one-truck thing matters here

There is no dispatcher deciding which technician you get and no commission structure deciding what gets recommended. The person who quotes the job is the person doing it, so there is nobody to hand a bad call to. That is the whole reason this shop stayed one truck.

  • Older houses behave differently

Much of the housing stock in this part of Alabama is old enough to have cast iron drains, galvanized supply, or a mix of three generations of repairs. Those systems do not fail the way a new build fails, and the repair that is right for one is wrong for the other. Experience with the local stock is most of the job.

How to tell what you’re dealing with

Knowing which of these sounds like your house makes the first call a lot shorter.

  • If the water smells or stains

Iron, sulfur and sediment are water-quality issues, not plumbing failures, though they shorten the life of everything they pass through.

  • If a drain gurgles when another runs

Air is being pulled through a trap because the vent is blocked or the line is partly closed. The gurgle is the system telling you where to look.

  • If it only happens when it rains

Groundwater is getting into the drain system, which points at a cracked line, a bad cleanout cap or a sump that is not keeping up.

  • If the floor is warm in one spot

On a slab that usually means a hot line is leaking underneath it. The warm patch is the cheapest diagnostic you will ever get.

“We contacted Paul late afternoon about a leak and he was at our house first thing the next morning. His expertise was unquestionable! He knew exactly what to do.”

Things worth doing yourself

None of this needs a plumber. It’s the short list that prevents the calls nobody wants to make.

  • Sump pumps Pour a bucket of water in the pit and watch it cycle. Twice a year, before the season you actually need it.
  • Garbage disposal Cold water, not hot, and let it run a few seconds after the grinding stops. Hot water melts grease into the line downstream.
  • Aerators Unscrew and rinse the faucet screens once a year, especially on well water. Most weak faucets are just a clogged screen.
  • Heater fittings Look at the connections on top of the tank for green or white crust. That is the first sign of a slow weep.
  • Shut off valve Know where the main shut off is and turn it by hand once a year. The moment you need it is the worst moment to discover it is seized.

Straight answers

Still not sure? Ask Paul directly.

Do you come out to Leroy?

Every Leroy job is quoted and done by the same person, so nothing gets lost between what you were told and what gets done.

Who shows up at the door?

Paul Evans. The same person who answers the phone, every time.

Are you licensed to work here?

Licensed Master Plumber MP4379, bonded and insured, working all of Washington County.

What areas do you cover?

Mobile, Baldwin and Washington County, out of Wilmer, roughly a fifty mile radius.

Will you try to sell me a replacement?

No. There is no commission structure here and no quota, so if a repair will hold, that is what you get told.

Do you work on older homes?

Yes. A lot of the housing stock here is older, and cast iron, galvanized and polybutylene all behave differently. That is diagnosis work, which is the part that matters.

Let’s talk solutions.

Tell Paul what it’s doing. He’ll tell you what it needs and when he can be there.
