Mobile County, Alabama

Called in Tanner Williams? You talk to the plumber.

Across Mobile County the soil is the story. Sandy loam over clay moves, and pipe that moves is pipe that eventually leaks at a joint.

Plumbing in Tanner Williams

In Tanner Williams the schedule belongs to the plumber, not to a dispatcher balancing six vans. That is why arrival times here tend to hold. The explanation is the part most people say they were missing from the last plumber. It comes standard here.

In Tanner Williams the job usually finishes on the first visit, because the description on the phone decides what gets loaded. See the full service list, or send Paul a message.

You get told what the work takes before it starts. Nobody here earns more by selling you a replacement. If the unit is sound and the failure is a part, the part is what you get.

A lot of Mobile County went up before 1975, and the cast iron and galvanized from that era are still in service. They do not announce a problem until they are well along. Pictures of the work are in the gallery.

What Mobile County plumbing runs into

  • The storm drain is not the sewer

Heavy rain here reaches the sanitary line through cracked pipe, bad cleanout caps and failed joints, not through the storm system. If a drain only misbehaves during a downpour, that is groundwater getting in somewhere and it is findable.

  • Slab versus crawlspace changes the whole job

A leak under a slab is located by listening and isolating zones and fixed through one small opening. The same leak in a crawlspace is a different afternoon entirely. Which one you have decides the method before anybody quotes it.

  • What the ground does here

Mobile County sits on sandy loam over clay with a water table that comes up fast after rain. Ground that moves is ground that works on buried pipe, and joints that were fine for twenty years start weeping at the connection rather than failing in the middle of a run. It is why so much of the drain work here ends up at a joint or a transition.

  • Plain language about what it costs

You find out what the work involves before it starts. Not a range that moves once the tools come out, and not a number that depends on what else can be added to the ticket. If there is a cheaper option that will hold, you hear about it, and if the cheap option is going to fail you hear about that too.

  • Why the one-truck thing matters here

There is no dispatcher deciding which technician you get and no commission structure deciding what gets recommended. The person who quotes the job is the person doing it, so there is nobody to hand a bad call to. That is the whole reason this shop stayed one truck.

How to tell what you’re dealing with

Knowing which of these sounds like your house makes the first call a lot shorter.

  • If it only happens when it rains

Groundwater is getting into the drain system, which points at a cracked line, a bad cleanout cap or a sump that is not keeping up.

  • If the floor is warm in one spot

On a slab that usually means a hot line is leaking underneath it. The warm patch is the cheapest diagnostic you will ever get.

  • If it is only one fixture

The problem is almost always local to that fixture: its trap, its supply, its shutoff or its own valve. Fixing the fixture fixes it, and nobody needs to open a wall.

  • If it is everything on one side of the house

That points at a branch line rather than a fixture, and it usually means a partial blockage or a slope problem in the drain serving that branch.

“I called at 0700 am because I did not have any water that morning… he calmed me down and assured me he would be here at 0900 and he was here”

Things worth doing yourself

None of this needs a plumber. It’s the short list that prevents the calls nobody wants to make.

  • Aerators Unscrew and rinse the faucet screens once a year, especially on well water. Most weak faucets are just a clogged screen.
  • Heater fittings Look at the connections on top of the tank for green or white crust. That is the first sign of a slow weep.
  • Shut off valve Know where the main shut off is and turn it by hand once a year. The moment you need it is the worst moment to discover it is seized.
  • Water heater Check the T and P valve and look at the base of the tank for rust or damp. Five minutes, twice a year.
  • Drains Hot water and a drain screen beat chemical cleaner. Caustic drain products damage older pipe and make a cable job messier later.

Straight answers

Still not sure? Ask Paul directly.

Do you come out to Tanner Williams?

Tanner Williams calls go straight to Paul. If he is under a sink he calls back, and you get the real picture rather than a placeholder appointment.

Who shows up at the door?

Paul Evans. The same person who answers the phone, every time.

Are you licensed to work here?

Licensed Master Plumber MP4379, bonded and insured, working all of Mobile County.

What areas do you cover?

Mobile, Baldwin and Washington County, out of Wilmer, roughly a fifty mile radius.

Will you try to sell me a replacement?

No. There is no commission structure here and no quota, so if a repair will hold, that is what you get told.

Do you work on older homes?

Yes. A lot of the housing stock here is older, and cast iron, galvanized and polybutylene all behave differently. That is diagnosis work, which is the part that matters.

Let’s talk solutions.

Tell Paul what it’s doing. He’ll tell you what it needs and when he can be there.
