A garbage disposal mounted under a sink with the PVC trap and dishwasher hose connected

Garbage Disposal Repair

A disposal repair done once, done right, and explained so you know what was done and why. That is the whole pitch, and it is why Wilmer homeowners keep the same number.

How Paul handles it

There is no script. Paul works the problem the way the house presents it, because a 1970s slab in Wilmer and a new build on the north side do not fail the same way and should not be quoted the same way.

Nothing gets sold that the house does not need. Running a one-truck shop means there is no quota pushing a replacement when a repair would hold, which is the single biggest difference between this and a franchise van.

Being a one-man operation is the whole point. Every job has Paul’s name and license on it, so there is no room for shortcuts and nobody to blame if it fails. The longer version of how this shop runs is on the about page, and the work itself is in the gallery.

What matters on a garbage disposal repair job

  • The failure gets diagnosed, not guessed

Replacing parts until the symptom stops is expensive and it does not tell you whether the real cause is still there. A meter, a camera or a pressure test costs a few minutes and tells you what actually failed, which is the only way to know the repair will hold.

  • Repair when repair is right

There is no quota here pushing a replacement sale. If the unit is sound and the failure is a part, it gets the part. If the thing is genuinely at the end of its life, you hear that plainly along with what it would cost to go either way, and you decide.

  • What caused it usually matters more than what broke

A part that failed early failed for a reason: pressure too high, no expansion control, sediment, or a connection that was fighting itself. Fixing the broken piece without addressing that just schedules the next call.

  • Why the one-truck thing matters here

There is no dispatcher deciding which technician you get and no commission structure deciding what gets recommended. The person who quotes the job is the person doing it, so there is nobody to hand a bad call to. That is the whole reason this shop stayed one truck.

  • Older houses behave differently

Much of the housing stock in this part of Alabama is old enough to have cast iron drains, galvanized supply, or a mix of three generations of repairs. Those systems do not fail the way a new build fails, and the repair that is right for one is wrong for the other. Experience with the local stock is most of the job.

How to tell what you’re dealing with

Knowing which of these sounds like your house makes the first call a lot shorter.

  • If the dishwasher leaves water standing

The drain hose, the air gap, or a disposal knockout left in on a new install. All three are under the sink.

  • If the disposal hums but will not spin

Something is jammed. Power it off at the switch first; the reset button underneath settles it more often than people think.

  • If the sink drains slow

The trap or the line right behind it, usually grease. It is local to the sink.

  • If water shows up under the sink

Check the supply lines and the drain slip joints first. A dishwasher hose is the other usual suspect.

How a call goes, turn by turn.

From the phone ringing to the truck pulling away, there are four stops and none of them involve a sales pitch.

  1. Start

    Paul picks up

You call (251) 421-0367 and the man who’ll do the work answers. No phone tree, no dispatcher, no waiting for a callback from somebody else.

  2. Then

    He’s on the way

You get a real time instead of a four-hour window, and he keeps it. One review has him there at 9 for a 7 a.m. call; another, on the way within twenty minutes.

  3. Then

    Finds the real cause

A camera, a meter or a pressure test before any number gets said out loud. A guess is how a repair comes back.

  4. Arrive

    Fixed and tested

Tested before the truck leaves. You hear what was done and what to keep an eye on, in plain words.

“Our water heater went out on a Friday and I was so worried we wouldn’t have hot water for the weekend. Called and they showed up in less than 30 mins!!”

Things worth doing yourself

None of this needs a plumber. It’s the short list that prevents the calls nobody wants to make.

  • Toilets A drop of food coloring in the tank will tell you in ten minutes whether the flapper leaks.
  • Grinder pumps Test that the alarm actually sounds. An alarm nobody has checked is not an alarm.
  • Water pressure Put a gauge on a hose bib once. Anything over about eighty psi is quietly shortening the life of every valve in the house.
  • Supply lines Braided stainless connectors on toilets and sinks have a service life. If they are older than a decade, they are overdue.
  • Cleanouts Know where your outside cleanout is. When a main backs up, finding it fast is the difference between a clean job and a mess.

Straight answers

Still not sure? Ask Paul directly.

Is a garbage disposal worth repairing?

If it jams or leaks at a fitting, yes. If the housing itself is leaking, replacing it is the honest answer.

Do you hook up dishwashers?

Yes: the supply, the drain hose, an air gap or high loop, and a leak check before Paul leaves.

Do you work on older homes?

Yes. A lot of the housing stock here is older, and cast iron, galvanized and polybutylene all behave differently. That is diagnosis work, which is the part that matters.

Who actually shows up?

Paul Evans. Every time. LT Drain is a one-truck, one-man operation on purpose, so the person who answers your call is the person who does the work.

Are you licensed?

Licensed Master Plumber MP4379, bonded and insured. The number is printed on this site because you should be able to check it with the Alabama plumbing board.

How fast can you get here?

Call and you get a real answer, not a window that spans the afternoon. Paul runs his own schedule, so he can tell you where he is and when he can be at your door. His reviews include a 7 a.m. call answered with a 9 a.m. arrival, and a call answered with someone on the way within twenty minutes.
