Mobile County, Alabama
Straight answers for Theodore homeowners.
A lot of Mobile County went up before 1975, and the cast iron and galvanized from that era are still in service. They do not announce a problem until they are well along.

Plumbing in Theodore
No call center sits between Theodore and the truck. You describe the problem to the plumber, which means the right tools are on board when he arrives. You get the cause, the fix and the honest version of how urgent it is.
The service list is not shorter in Theodore. Neither is the truck’s inventory. See the full service list, or send Paul a message.
You get told what the work takes before it starts. A quota would change what gets recommended, so there is no quota. The work suggested is the work the house actually needs.
Mobile County runs from the delta down to the Gulf, and the plumbing reflects it: cast iron in the older parts of Mobile, newer slab construction out west, and a water table that keeps everybody honest about drainage. Pictures of the work are in the gallery.
What Mobile County plumbing runs into
Salt air and humidity
Close to the bay and the Gulf, exposed fittings, hose bibs and water heater connections corrode faster than they do inland. It shows up first at the outside spigots and at the top of the water heater, which is why those are the first places worth looking when something is weeping.
Cast iron is on a clock
A lot of pre-1975 Mobile County drains went in as cast iron, and cast iron does not fail suddenly. It rusts from the inside until the channel is running through scale rather than pipe. A camera shows you where a given line sits in that process, which is the difference between planning a repair and reacting to a backup.
The storm drain is not the sewer
Heavy rain here reaches the sanitary line through cracked pipe, bad cleanout caps and failed joints, not through the storm system. If a drain only misbehaves during a downpour, that is groundwater getting in somewhere and it is findable.
Why the one-truck thing matters here
There is no dispatcher deciding which technician you get and no commission structure deciding what gets recommended. The person who quotes the job is the person doing it, so there is nobody to hand a bad call to. That is the whole reason this shop stayed one truck.
Older houses behave differently
Much of the housing stock in this part of Alabama is old enough to have cast iron drains, galvanized supply, or a mix of three generations of repairs. Those systems do not fail the way a new build fails, and the repair that is right for one is wrong for the other. Experience with the local stock is most of the job.

How to tell what you’re dealing with
Knowing which of these sounds like your house makes the first call a lot shorter.
If one side of a faucet is weak
Hot-only or cold-only weakness is almost always a supply stop, a cartridge or a clogged aerator screen rather than anything in the wall.
If you hear it in the walls
Hammering when a valve closes is pressure with nowhere to go. Running water with nothing on is a leak or a toilet that never stops filling.
If the water smells or stains
Iron, sulfur and sediment are water-quality issues, not plumbing failures, though they shorten the life of everything they pass through.
If a drain gurgles when another runs
Air is being pulled through a trap because the vent is blocked or the line is partly closed. The gurgle is the system telling you where to look.
“He gave me options with no pressure to decide one way or the other.”
Things worth doing yourself
None of this needs a plumber. It’s the short list that prevents the calls nobody wants to make.
- Cleanouts Know where your outside cleanout is. When a main backs up, finding it fast is the difference between a clean job and a mess.
- Washing machine Turn the washer valves off if the house will be empty for a week. A burst washer hose is one of the most common big water losses.
- Sump pumps Pour a bucket of water in the pit and watch it cycle. Twice a year, before the season you actually need it.
- Garbage disposal Cold water, not hot, and let it run a few seconds after the grinding stops. Hot water melts grease into the line downstream.
- Aerators Unscrew and rinse the faucet screens once a year, especially on well water. Most weak faucets are just a clogged screen.
