Mobile County, Alabama
Grand Bay plumbing without the upsell.
Across Mobile County the soil is the story. Sandy loam over clay moves, and pipe that moves is pipe that eventually leaks at a joint.

Plumbing in Grand Bay
For Grand Bay the answer about timing comes from the person holding the calendar and the wrench, so it is a real one. That is the practical benefit of a one-man shop. You hear what is wrong, why it happened, and what happens if it waits. Then you decide.
Everything on the service list is available in Grand Bay, and the truck carries what most of it takes to finish the same visit. See the full service list, or send Paul a message.
You get told what the work takes before it starts. A quota would change what gets recommended, so there is no quota. The work suggested is the work the house actually needs.
A lot of Mobile County went up before 1975, and the cast iron and galvanized from that era are still in service. They do not announce a problem until they are well along. Pictures of the work are in the gallery.
What Mobile County plumbing runs into
The age of the housing stock
Midtown Mobile and the older neighborhoods carry cast iron drains and some galvanized supply still in service. Those systems do not announce a problem until they are well along, because cast iron rusts from the inside and galvanized closes up slowly. A camera tells you where a line actually is in that process instead of guessing from the age of the house.
Salt air and humidity
Close to the bay and the Gulf, exposed fittings, hose bibs and water heater connections corrode faster than they do inland. It shows up first at the outside spigots and at the top of the water heater, which is why those are the first places worth looking when something is weeping.
Cast iron is on a clock
A lot of pre-1975 Mobile County drains went in as cast iron, and cast iron does not fail suddenly. It rusts from the inside until the channel is running through scale rather than pipe. A camera shows you where a given line sits in that process, which is the difference between planning a repair and reacting to a backup.
What happens after the work is done
The repair gets tested before anybody packs up, the work area gets cleaned, and you get told what was done and what to watch for. If something is going to need attention in a year, you hear about it now rather than discovering it later.
What a real diagnosis looks like
The first thing that happens is somebody looks at the actual failure instead of the symptom you can see from the doorway. That means opening the panel, running the camera, putting a meter on it, or isolating the zone. It takes longer than guessing and it is the only part of the job that decides whether the repair holds.

How to tell what you’re dealing with
Knowing which of these sounds like your house makes the first call a lot shorter.
If the floor is warm in one spot
On a slab that usually means a hot line is leaking underneath it. The warm patch is the cheapest diagnostic you will ever get.
If it is only one fixture
The problem is almost always local to that fixture: its trap, its supply, its shutoff or its own valve. Fixing the fixture fixes it, and nobody needs to open a wall.
If it is everything on one side of the house
That points at a branch line rather than a fixture, and it usually means a partial blockage or a slope problem in the drain serving that branch.
If the lowest drain backs up first
Water finds the lowest opening. A tub or floor drain that fills when the washer runs is the main line talking, and clearing the sink upstairs does nothing for it.
“We had a simple clogged kitchen sink issue and an outrageous quote from a large company.”
Things worth doing yourself
None of this needs a plumber. It’s the short list that prevents the calls nobody wants to make.
- Heater fittings Look at the connections on top of the tank for green or white crust. That is the first sign of a slow weep.
- Shut off valve Know where the main shut off is and turn it by hand once a year. The moment you need it is the worst moment to discover it is seized.
- Water heater Check the T and P valve and look at the base of the tank for rust or damp. Five minutes, twice a year.
- Drains Hot water and a drain screen beat chemical cleaner. Caustic drain products damage older pipe and make a cable job messier later.
- Hose bibs Disconnect hoses before the first hard freeze. A connected hose holds water in the bib and that is what splits it.
