Washington County, Alabama

One truck. One man. All of Deer Park.

Washington County is rural and spread out, and a lot of it is on well water and septic rather than municipal service. That changes what a plumbing call looks like before anybody opens a wall.

Plumbing in Deer Park

In Deer Park the schedule belongs to the plumber, not to a dispatcher balancing six vans. That is why arrival times here tend to hold. The diagnosis comes first and it comes in words you can repeat to someone else. That is deliberate.

Every service listed on this site is available in Deer Park, finished in one visit wherever the parts on board allow. See the full service list, or send Paul a message.

You get told what the work takes before it starts. Nobody here earns more by selling you a replacement. If the unit is sound and the failure is a part, the part is what you get.

North of the Mobile County line the houses sit further apart and the service runs are longer, so a leak can run a long time before anybody sees it on a bill. Pictures of the work are in the gallery.

What Washington County plumbing runs into

  • When the pump is the problem

On a well system a pressure complaint is as likely to be the tank, the switch or the pump as anything in the house plumbing. Checking the tank’s air charge before touching a fixture saves chasing the wrong thing.

  • Septic changes what can go down

On septic, a garbage disposal and heavy chemical cleaner are both harder on the system than most people realize. What goes down the drain matters more here than it does on a municipal line.

  • Distance is part of the diagnosis

A long service run between the well house and the home means a leak can run a long time with no surface sign. Watching whether the pump cycles with every fixture off is the fastest test there is.

  • What a real diagnosis looks like

The first thing that happens is somebody looks at the actual failure instead of the symptom you can see from the doorway. That means opening the panel, running the camera, putting a meter on it, or isolating the zone. It takes longer than guessing and it is the only part of the job that decides whether the repair holds.

  • Plain language about what it costs

You find out what the work involves before it starts. Not a range that moves once the tools come out, and not a number that depends on what else can be added to the ticket. If there is a cheaper option that will hold, you hear about it, and if the cheap option is going to fail you hear about that too.

How to tell what you’re dealing with

Knowing which of these sounds like your house makes the first call a lot shorter.

  • If it is everything on one side of the house

That points at a branch line rather than a fixture, and it usually means a partial blockage or a slope problem in the drain serving that branch.

  • If the lowest drain backs up first

Water finds the lowest opening. A tub or floor drain that fills when the washer runs is the main line talking, and clearing the sink upstairs does nothing for it.

  • If it only happens with hot water

That isolates it to the water heater or the hot side of the system, which is a much shorter list than the whole house and usually a much cheaper answer.

  • If it got worse slowly

Gradual loss of flow is scale, sediment or root intrusion closing a passage over time. Sudden loss is a break, a blockage that arrived all at once, or a valve that failed.

“He found the problem in my lines SOO quickly whereas other “big” chain companies couldn’t tell me or give me any lasting suggestions. I was billed exactly what I was quoted from LT, not a penny over!”

Things worth doing yourself

None of this needs a plumber. It’s the short list that prevents the calls nobody wants to make.

  • Water heater Check the T and P valve and look at the base of the tank for rust or damp. Five minutes, twice a year.
  • Drains Hot water and a drain screen beat chemical cleaner. Caustic drain products damage older pipe and make a cable job messier later.
  • Hose bibs Disconnect hoses before the first hard freeze. A connected hose holds water in the bib and that is what splits it.
  • Toilets A drop of food coloring in the tank will tell you in ten minutes whether the flapper leaks.
  • Grinder pumps Test that the alarm actually sounds. An alarm nobody has checked is not an alarm.

Straight answers

Still not sure? Ask Paul directly.

Do you come out to Deer Park?

For Deer Park the answer about timing comes from the person holding the calendar and the wrench, so it is a real one. That is the practical benefit of a one-man shop.

Who shows up at the door?

Paul Evans. The same person who answers the phone, every time.

Are you licensed to work here?

Licensed Master Plumber MP4379, bonded and insured, working all of Washington County.

What areas do you cover?

Mobile, Baldwin and Washington County, out of Wilmer, roughly a fifty mile radius.

Will you try to sell me a replacement?

No. There is no commission structure here and no quota, so if a repair will hold, that is what you get told.

Do you work on older homes?

Yes. A lot of the housing stock here is older, and cast iron, galvanized and polybutylene all behave differently. That is diagnosis work, which is the part that matters.

Let’s talk solutions.

Tell Paul what it’s doing. He’ll tell you what it needs and when he can be there.
